The Deb

When the whimsical, stocky teenage dork Taylah and her hyper-woke, inner-city cousin Maeve, find themselves outcast and humiliated in the rural town of Dunburn, they join forces on a quest to attend the town’s annual Debutante Ball as their one shot at redemption. However, the unlikely pair's insatiable hunger for the spotlight throws them into mutual betrayal and chaos.

The winner of the 2019 Rebel Wilson Comedy Commission, written and co-directed by Hannah Reilly with original music by multi-ARIA Award-winning Megan Washington, The Deb is a heart-warming and uproarious coming-of-age musical about friendship, courage and learning to celebrate who you really are. Produced with ATYP and Rebel Wilson’s Camp Sugar Productions, “The Deb” opened the brand new Rebel Theatre in Sydney to critical acclaim and an extended season.

It has since been named one of the fifteen “greatest Australian musicals of stage and screen” by The Guardian.

‘The Deb’ was also recently announced in Cannes as a feature film, written by Hannah Reilly, Music by Megan Washington, with lyrics by Washington/Reilly, directed by Rebel Wilson, produced in partnership with AI/Unigram (I, Tonya, Hacksaw Ridge) and award-winning Australian producer Bunya Productions (The Drover’s Wife, Mystery Road). Shooting is to commence in Australia in late 2023.
